Tom was born
in Chicago in 1946. He studied Commercial Art in High
School, but never did anything with it. Tom has learned
photography through reading and interface with other
photographers. He's been taking photographs since he was boy,
starting with an old Kodak Brownie. Through the years
Tom has graduated to more sophisticated equipment and his
current main shooter is a Mamiya 645 medium format camera,
though he often shoots 4x5 large format as well his old trusty
35mm.
Tom continues to use film, shooting mostly black and white and
developing and printing in his own darkroom. Recently
Tom has been shooting some digital photography as a second
shooter with his photography partner Emma Lupton. Tom does have
his color film images
scanned and put on CDs for printing on his own own system.
Black and white images are printed in the traditional way in a
darkroom, or digitally with a computer.
Tom
has traveled extensively throughout the world, spending
many years living in Japan. He has many images from
the Far East, France, and England, as well as images from
around the United States.
Four of
Tom's photographs have been published by Serbin
Communication in The Best of Photography Annual since 1999.
He is a member of the Professional Photographers of America,
and Professional Photographers of North Carolina.
Tom and his wife Sari,
and Emma recently opened the first photography studio to be
located on board the Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry
Point, NC. First Flight Photography had its Grand Opening on
June 12, 2008.
Tom
currently lives in New Bern, North Carolina and splits his time between
New Bern, Greenville, South Carolina, and Chicago.
Emma Lupton was born in Hobucken, North
Carolina in 1950. She attended Randolph Community
College in Asheboro, NC and graduated in 2006 with a degree
in Portrait Photography and Studio Management. Her work
entitled "Foggy Harbor" was published in Our State
Magazine Down Home In North Carolina. The work was
also chosen as Kodak's Picture of the Day and was displayed
on the Kodak Marquee in Times Square in New York City.
Emma
gave up her career of 21 years to follow her dream to become
a professional photographer. Since graduating from
Randolph Community College she has embarked on her own. She enjoys photographing weddings and
portraits, especially brides and engaged couples. She
has a knack for bringing out the character of the person she
is photographing.
Having
come from a small fishing village she likes to seek out
weathered boats and waterfront images, waterfowl, and local
fishermen as unique subject matter. More of her work
can be seen at emmalupton.smugmug.com
